When the visionary team behind Better Man set out to bring the story of UK rock star Robbie Williams to the big screen, they needed a production facility that could match their ambition.

With elaborate set designs, high-energy concert sequences featuring hundreds of extras, and a crew of more than 300, they required a seamless, state-of-the-art production environment. 

At the heart of Better Man’s production was Docklands Studios Melbourne’s Super Stage (Stage 6)—one of the largest and most versatile sound stages in the Southern Hemisphere.

Spanning an impressive 3,700 square metres (40,000 square feet) with soaring 17-metre-high (56 feet) ceilings, the stage provided an expansive canvas for multiple large-scale set builds and complex choreography.

Stage 6 played host to a large-scale concert scene set in London’s Royal Albert Hall, bringing the electric atmosphere of Robbie Williams’ performances to life. 

The same stage also housed a pivotal scene set on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean, where Robbie meets girlfriend Nicole Appleton at a glamorous New Year’s Eve party.

The film’s extensive set builds weren’t confined to just one stage. The Red Lion pub and Robbie’s family home—both exterior and interior—were meticulously recreated on sets built in Docklands’ Stage 2, ensuring an immersive and controlled environment for key moments in the story.

Meanwhile, Stage 3 hosted additional sets, including the BBC’s Parkinson TV show, and Nicole’s flat, allowing the production team to efficiently transition between different scenes within the same facility.

The studio’s in-house support services—from construction workshops to costume and production offices—created a one-stop production hub, enhancing workflow and collaboration.
